I first tasted this tonic at an Ayurvedic retreat in Bali earlier this year and now it’s one of my staples. Ojas means strong and vital in Sanskrit and that’s exactly how I feel when I drink this as a morning wake up or afternoon “pick me up please”.
With the plethora of drinks to choose from apart from coffee – ceremonial cacao, golden turmeric, matcha latte, LSDandelion, chagaccino… – I just love the simplicity of the 3 base ingredients – dates, almonds and water – especially for winter.
Almond skins can irritate the gut. If you have more patience than me, please feel free to peel your soaked almonds first instead of straining. I prefer dried Iranian dates and you can soak these too. Add rose petals, chai spices like cinnamon, ginger, cardamon, vanilla or nutmeg and ghee for more robustness to make the drink more filling.
Drink it separately from meals as a snack and avoid it if you have sluggish digestion, dullness, heaviness and coated tongue, all signs of ama, or toxic build up in the body.
Ingredients
15 almonds soaked overnight,
2 dates, pitted and soaked (optional)
1 cup of boiling water
¼ cup of milk of your choice for extra creaminess
Blend all the ingredients and simply strain into a breakfast bowl or mug. Take 5 mins to pause in your day and enjoy the bliss of ojas.
Enjoy!
